Metamora Old
Settlers' Days History
Woodford County Old Settlers’ organization had
its original roots as far back as 1875 when a constitution was
adopted and officers were elected. The group made the decision to
have a “grand picnic in September”. Its purpose was to keep up the
old associations of the pioneer days and to preserve the
reminiscences of the wilderness where they built their log cabins
among the Indians. In 1878 the association died out. It was
revised in 1891 at a meeting held in El Paso. Through the years
picnics were held in El Paso, Metamora and Eureka until 1901 when
Metamora was selected as the permanent place.
Families came with filled picnic baskets to eat in our beautiful
park. A business meeting followed with dances, band concerts,
baseball games, wrestling matches and horseshoe tournaments taking
place throughout the day and into the evening.
